Merlot is a red grape variety native from the South-West of France close to the Bordeaux area. In Italy Merlot arrived at the end of 1800. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, and then quickly spread to the Veneto and Trentino South-Tyrol where it found ideal environmental conditions, but is now common in many other regions, with sometimes surprising results, even without the addition of other grapes. The Merlot grape variety prefers hilly and cool soils, with good moisture since it is averse to dry climates.
